Health Screenings

Among the range of health screenings provided for abuelitos through Vida are vaccinations, routine mammograms provided by George Washington University Hospital’s MammoVan, as well as prostate, eye, oral, and bone densitometry exams. All are provided at no cost to abuelitos and their families. Every two years, for abuelitos without adequate health coverage, Vida staff secure the prescription glasses they need.

Health ScreeningsWellness staff take the vital signs of abuelitos regularly and assist them with glucose self-checks. Those abuelitos who are newly diagnosed with diabetes are taught to use their glucose meters on site and learn about self-monitoring their condition.

Most importantly, staff regularly monitor abuelitos to ensure that medications prescribed by their family doctor are being taken as indicated and not mixed with substances like alcohol, certain foods, or other medications that may bring on adverse effects.

Once a year, Vida holds a health fair that is open to the community and during which other health care providers in the District participate. All of the health screenings and tests typically offered at Vida, along with talks by community speakers and cooking demonstrations, as well as language appropriate educational materials, are made available free of charge to those new to Vida or those who might need the services and not wish to attend Vida daily.
