Mental Health

When they first register, Vida staff determine the mental health needs of our abuelitos onsite. They assess the conditions (such as PTSD, Alzheimer’s Disease, physical and emotional abuse, or depression) from which abuelitos may be suffering and make referrals where appropriate to secure the help abuelitos need. For those already diagnosed, Vida’s programs have shown a marked improvement in abuelitos suffering from diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Vida staff also carry out onsite interventions, such as short-term, one-on-one therapy, and provide referrals to local mental health clinics and psychiatrists, if they determine an abuelito may need medication.

A support group focused on mental health conditions and the emotional impact of chronic illness is held weekly onsite, and provides abuelitos with a safe and welcoming environment where they can be of support to one another under the guidance of trained staff.
